Such an amazing game, I played a game with four other people last Saturday and it was one of the best one shots I've played. The five of us each ended up with such a narratively satisfying combination of what our apprentices feared and desired. My demon princess was able to keep from being immediately sent back to hell but in claiming the tower and defeating her master proved herself a worthy heir. The eternal grad student didn't find what he needed to be able to cast spells better but he realised his thesis project was a success (although the wizard stole his memories of it). Said thesis project now a living spell managed to restore her father's memories of her creation but also realised what an abusive PoS her other father (the wizard) was. The oldest resident of the tower a sentient light being wasn't able to free themselves from the tower but they got revenge on the wizard and are much more comfortable with my demon princess being in charge of it all. They also have company as the final apprentice is now also bound to the tower and whilst they aren't the true perfected combination of themselves and the spell beast that corrupted them they wanted is happy being the beast of the lady of the tower.
Played this with a group of strangers at our local library and it was absolutely fabulous! I think every single person at the table ended up being really stunned by how deep the story was that we had stumbled into. Great game!
this comment made my day!! i'm so glad you all had such a wonderful time with it and i'm thrilled to hear that this game ended up at a cool li'l library event; thank you so much for taking the time to say something and i'm so glad you made and found such a wonderful story!! ๐๐
I love this game. I introduced it to a place called CRS: Crisis Residential Services, where I was staying for psychiatric purposes. I was told it was one of the best resources they'd been given for stress release. Everyone had tons of fun and got out of their shells in ways the workers had never seen.
Just had a lot of fun playing this with my friends! The cards quickly told us who was the wizard's favorite (and least favorite) and helped us craft an intrigue rich story with a satisfying ending. I already look forward to playing again!
Had an excellent time with this as a solo journaling experience. A tweak for solo I used is to insert the Ace of Spades 1/4 of the way from the top of the deck. This still developed the story well, especially since I was the only player, and probably increases replayability even more.
Some notes on my session: the story developed wonderfully with a full-fledged arc and a sense of growing unease as the secrets of the wizard and the tower are uncovered. Your character's backstory develops on the fly, leading to a final catharsis.
This is an extremely satisfying storytelling game I'll keep returning to. An absolute gem.
thank you so much for leaving such a kind comment!!!! i'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed the game!! the ace of spades placement tweak is an excellent idea, too, so thank you for sharing it!! ๐๐
